THE TOP 100 AUSTRALIA/NEW ZEALAND SINGLES OF ALL TIME

The most successful singles from the Australian charts of all time by artists commonly known as being from Australia or New Zealand for their recording career (or part there of). This includes artists born internationally who started their career after moving to Australia, and local artists starting out in Australia, and later moving overseas.

Duets between local artists with an international partner have been included, however, only half the chart success has been counted for this list (these have been marked * below). Singles featuring international “featured” artists have been included, with all success of the single counted for this list.

Each year of success has been calculated according to the success of the singles around that same era, with a multiplier in place to “normalise” the success of all singles over the entire 70+ year history. For example, singles from the 60s and 70s have a higher multiplier in place to account for the limited shelf life singles had to chart with, while singles from the 2010s and 2020s have a lower multiplier due to their ability to chart indefinitely from streaming and download sales.

THE TOP 100 “RELIGIOUS” SINGLES OF ALL TIME

In the spirit of Christmas 2022, we’re counting down the biggest singles with a religious theme that charted in Australia since 1950. The final list has been formulated using the following three rules:

  • Songs with a title featuring words more associated with religion, than not, were an automatic qualify. Examples of these are Heaven, Angel, God and, of course, Christmas. This also includes the names of religious figures.
  • Songs featuring a word that can be associated with religion, but also used in non-religious contexts, were included, only if the rest of the lyrics of the song mention other religious associations. For example, George Michael’s “Faith” and Madonna’s “Papa Don’t Preach” did not qualify as their use of “faith” and “preach” were in non-religious ways, with no further mention of religion in the songs.
  • I have also included songs that don’t mention religious words in the song title, but do have a strong religious association by using relevant words throughout the lyrics. Songs such as Lenny Kravitz’s “Are You Gonna Go My Way” and Helen Reddy’s “I Don’t Know How To Love Him”, while have strong religious associations, are not included in the list due to no actual religious buzz words being used in the lyrics.
